In the fashion, garment or home textile industry, fabric selection is one of the most fundamental factors determining a product's quality, drape and cost. The technical term that never leaves professionals' lips when choosing fabric, and that is questioned most often in sourcing processes, is undoubtedly the concept of \"weight.\" In its clearest and shortest definition, fabric weight is the weight, in grams, of one square meter of fabric. In textile literature and international trade it is denoted by the symbol GSM (Grams per Square Meter). A fabric's weight is the most concrete data point that tells us whether it is thin or thick, and whether it is suited to summer or winter wear. How well a garment you design fits its pattern, how it drapes, and the hand-feel it leaves with the end consumer are all directly related to the fabric's weight per square meter.<\/p>\n

What Does Fabric Weight (GSM) Technically Mean?<\/h3>\n

A fabric's weight is not just a simple weight measurement. It provides technical information about the density and thickness of the yarns making up the fabric, and about how tight the woven or knit structure is.<\/p>\n

There are three fundamental factors that determine a fabric's weight:<\/p>\n

Yarn Count (Thickness):<\/strong> The thicker the yarns making up the fabric (that is, the lower the Ne or Nm count number), the higher the fabric's weight.<\/p>\n

A standard method is applied in textile laboratories or production workshops to precisely measure a fabric's weight. This process requires two basic pieces of equipment: a GSM cutter (sample cutter) and a precision scale.<\/p>\n

Standard Method (Using a Circular Sample Cutter)<\/h5>\n

<\/p>\n

The GSM cutter cuts a circular piece of fabric with an area of exactly 100 square centimeters. This cut piece is weighed on a precision scale. The resulting weight is in grams. Since 1 square meter equals 10,000 square centimeters, the result obtained is multiplied by 100 to arrive at the fabric's weight per square meter.<\/p>\n
